Renowned Nigerian communication scholar and veteran media professional, Professor Idowu Akanbi Sobowale, has died at the age of 85.

His death was announced in a family statement issued on Thursday, October 8, 2026, by Akinniyi Sowunmi.

According to the statement, titled “Transition to Glory,” Sobowale passed away in the early hours of Thursday.

The family described his passing as a significant loss to Nigeria’s media and communication community, particularly the Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals in Nigeria (ACSPN).

Sobowale, who held the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), was also a Deacon and a respected figure in communication scholarship.

Throughout his career, he was recognised for his contributions to communication education and the development of media scholarship in Nigeria.

The family described him as a beloved father whose passing would be deeply felt by relatives, colleagues, students and members of the wider communication profession.

His death marks the passing of a prominent figure in Nigeria’s academic and media community.

The family said arrangements for his funeral would be communicated in due course.
