Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has been decorated as Grand Patron of the All Africa Challenge Trophy, AACT, Nigeria 2026, ahead of the continental women’s amateur golf championship scheduled for Abuja from November 2 to 7.
The decoration was performed by the Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria during a visit to the First Lady as part of preparations and efforts to build national support for the tournament.
The association also presented its proposed Girls in Golf Legacy Project, an initiative designed to mentor and develop 300 girls in the sport.
Commending the initiative, Tinubu said the programme could help nurture a new generation of female golfers capable of competing at the highest levels.
She described golf as a sport requiring discipline, commitment and dedication, noting that the qualities developed through the game could also contribute to the personal development of young girls.
The First Lady congratulated the association on securing the hosting rights for the championship and described the event as an opportunity to showcase Nigeria and promote tourism and economic activities.
Earlier, President of the Court of Appeal and Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the IBB International Golf and Country Club, Justice Monica Mensem, commended the First Lady for her initiatives supporting women and girls.
President of the Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria, Dr Lami Onayi Ahmed, formally sought Tinubu’s endorsement of the championship and invited her to participate in the opening ceremony and ceremonial tee-off.
Ahmed and Justice Mensem subsequently decorated the First Lady as Grand Patron of AACT Nigeria 2026.
Tinubu marked the occasion with a symbolic tee-off using a golf practice kit at her office.
Nigeria secured the hosting rights for the 2026 championship following a competitive bidding process in Morocco.
Female golfers from about 30 countries are expected to participate in the tournament at the IBB International Golf and Country Club in Abuja.
The 2026 edition will mark the third time Nigeria has hosted the continental women’s amateur golf championship.
