President Bola Tinubu will address Nigerians in a nationwide broadcast on October 1 as the Federal Government begins preparations for a low-key celebration of Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
The Federal Government has inaugurated an Inter-Ministerial Committee to coordinate activities for the anniversary, which marks 66 years since Nigeria gained independence on October 1, 1960.
The committee held its inaugural meeting on Thursday, where officials unveiled the programme of activities leading to the celebration.
The planned presidential broadcast will form a major part of the October 1 programme, with Tinubu expected to address Nigerians on the anniversary and the state of the nation.
The government said this year’s commemoration would be modest, with activities designed to reflect the significance of the anniversary without an elaborate celebration.
Officials said the occasion would also provide an opportunity for the administration to highlight its programmes and reforms as Nigeria continues to confront economic and social challenges.
The Inter-Ministerial Committee is responsible for coordinating the various government institutions involved in the anniversary and ensuring that scheduled activities are implemented ahead of October 1.
Nigeria gained independence from Britain on October 1, 1960, making the 2026 commemoration the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
Tinubu has delivered nationwide broadcasts during previous Independence Day commemorations, including the 2025 anniversary, when he addressed Nigerians on the economy, national development and his administration’s policies.
