The United Nations has expressed concern over what it describes as an escalating crackdown on dissent in Iran, revealing that at least 40 people including 18 protesters have been executed on national security-related charges since the beginning of 2026.

According to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk on Monday, he said that Iranian authorities have intensified measures against perceived opposition, carrying out widespread arrests and imposing stricter limitations on civic freedoms across the country.

The UN official said thousands of people have reportedly been detained as part of the government’s efforts to suppress dissent, while restrictions on public expression and civil society activities have become increasingly severe.

He described the situation as a continuing deterioration of human rights conditions, highlighting concerns over the use of national security laws to prosecute and punish protesters and other critics of the government.

Human rights organisations and international observers have repeatedly called on Iranian authorities to uphold due process, protect fundamental freedoms and ensure that judicial proceedings meet internationally recognised standards.
