The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has urged Guinness Nigeria Plc to continue prioritising regulatory compliance in its business operations.

Olukoyede gave the charge on Tuesday while receiving the management team of Guinness Nigeria, led by its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Girish Sharma, at the EFCC headquarters.

According to a statement by the Commission, the EFCC chairman stressed that compliance with laws and regulations remained the most effective way for businesses to avoid legal and financial troubles.

“I keep telling people that it’s cheaper for you to comply than not to. Whatever you think you are saving by not complying, you will lose with time,” Olukoyede said.

“It’s never too expensive to comply. The cost you put into compliance is never lost.”

He encouraged the company to sustain its commitment to ethical business practices, assuring that the EFCC would continue to work with organisations that operate within the law.

Olukoyede also commended Guinness Nigeria for its corporate social responsibility initiatives, noting that the company had demonstrated commitment not only to profitability but also to societal development.

He stated that one of the goals of the EFCC under his leadership was to use anti-corruption efforts to support economic growth by partnering with responsible corporate organisations.

The EFCC chairman explained that beyond investigation and prosecution, the Commission also focuses on preventing financial crimes through its Fraud Risk Assessment and Control Department.

According to him, the department works with ministries, departments, agencies, and private organisations to assess operational risks and strengthen internal controls.

He further reminded companies of their obligations regarding tax compliance, warning that failure to pay taxes, underpayment of taxes, or failure to file tax returns on time constituted offences under the law.

“We no longer wait for people to commit crimes; we work with them to prevent the commission of crimes,” he added.

Speaking during the visit, the Managing Director of Guinness Nigeria, Girish Sharma, reaffirmed the company’s confidence in the Nigerian economy despite prevailing economic challenges.

He noted that Guinness Nigeria had maintained operations in the country for 76 years, even as some multinational firms exited the market.

Also speaking, the company’s Corporate Relations and Legal Director, Rotimi Odusola, said Guinness Nigeria remained committed to conducting business in line with the law and regulatory standards.

“We believe that there is no right way to do the wrong thing,” Odusola stated.

“It is extremely important to us as an organisation that compliance with rules, regulations, and laws is at the top of the manner in which we do our business.”
