The Federal Government has assured Nigerians that the recent increase in the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, is not a result of supply shortages or policy failure.

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, gave the assurance on Monday, stating that the government remains committed to ensuring adequate, reliable and affordable gas supply for domestic consumers, industries and power generation.

According to the Minister, the recent rise in LPG prices is largely attributable to foreign exchange volatility, rising logistics costs, infrastructure challenges and fluctuations in international LPG prices.

“The recent price adjustments are driven largely by prevailing market realities such as foreign exchange volatility, rising logistics costs, infrastructure constraints and fluctuations in international LPG prices,” the Minister said in a statement issued by his spokesman, Louis Ibah.

Ekpo emphasised that the increase should not be interpreted as evidence of policy failure, noting that government interventions aimed at stabilising the domestic LPG market are already yielding positive results.

He cited the directive requiring that all LPG produced in Nigeria be prioritised for domestic consumption, saying the policy has strengthened local supply, reduced dependence on imports and improved market resilience.

To further stabilise the market, the Minister said he has directed the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) to intensify engagement with producers, marketers and other stakeholders to sustain supply and enhance market stability.

He also disclosed that marketers have pledged to increase LPG import volumes to complement domestic production.

The Minister announced that deliveries from the newly completed Seplat gas facility are expected to commence in July, a development he said would significantly increase LPG availability across the country.

Ekpo further assured Nigerians that regulatory mechanisms remain in place to prevent producers from exporting LPG volumes earmarked for the domestic market.

“The outlook for LPG supply remains positive, and the Federal Government will continue to pursue measures that enhance availability, affordability and long-term energy security for Nigerian consumers,” he stated.

The reassurance comes amid growing concerns from consumers over rising cooking gas prices, which have added to the cost-of-living pressures facing many households across the country.
