The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Olakunle Nafiu, has commended the Abia State Government for its support to the scheme and corps members serving in the state.
Mr Nafiu gave the commendation during a courtesy visit to Governor Alex Otti at Umunu, Umuehim, in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of the state.
The NYSC director-general specifically acknowledged the state government’s renovation of the NYSC orientation camp, provision of a new secretariat complex and upward review of corps members’ allowances.
He appealed to the governor to implement the recently reviewed allowance for corps members and commence the second phase of the renovation of the orientation camp.
Mr Nafiu described Abia as a peaceful and corps-member-friendly state, noting that the number of female corps members serving in the state was higher than that of males.
He also said Abia was among the few states where corps members were deployed to all local government areas.
Responding, Mr Otti congratulated Mr Nafiu on his appointment as NYSC director-general and explained that his decision to renovate the orientation camp was prompted by the poor condition of its facilities when he visited the facility in 2023.
The governor said the first phase of the renovation had been completed and that he had directed the commencement of the second phase.
Mr Otti said he was pleased with the presence of 8,890 corps members serving across the state and requested the deployment of more corps members to Abia.
He said the state remained welcoming to corps members and other Nigerians who came to live and work there.
The governor cited the state’s Head of Service, Benson Ojeikere, as an example, saying Mr Ojeikere was deployed to Abia as a corps member and was subsequently offered automatic employment into the state civil service after distinguishing himself during his service year.
