At least 12 people have been killed and 21 others injured after Russia launched a wave of drone and missile attacks on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, and surrounding areas, Ukrainian authorities have said.
Kyiv regional military administration chief Tymur Tkachenko said the region came under a “massive attack” involving Russian missiles and strike drones during overnight operations.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said eight people were killed in the capital, while five others, including two children, were injured in the attacks. Ukrainian prosecutors reported that four additional people were killed in the wider Kyiv region, where a residential building was damaged in Boryspil.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attacks, describing them as Russian strikes targeting civilians. He said an Indian citizen was among those killed and called on international partners to strengthen Ukraine’s air defence capabilities.
Zelenskyy said about 50 people were evacuated from the damaged building in Boryspil, adding that Russia’s attacks cause greater destruction when Ukraine lacks sufficient air defence systems.
Russia’s Defence Ministry said its forces targeted military and energy facilities in Kyiv, Odesa and nearby regions during the overnight operation.
Ukraine’s border service said Russian forces also struck the Orlivka ferry checkpoint on the border with Romania, a NATO member.
Ukraine’s Air Force spokesman Yurii Ihnat said Russia had increased the use of advanced drones that were more difficult to intercept. He said about 2,800 jet-powered drones had been launched at Ukraine over the previous six days, with around 60 per cent intercepted.
The attacks occurred as European Union defence and foreign ministers met in Ireland to discuss measures to strengthen Ukraine’s air defence systems. Kyiv has reported shortages of interceptor missiles, including U.S.-made Patriot systems used to counter ballistic threats.
Meanwhile, Ukraine carried out drone operations inside Russia, with authorities reporting attacks on the port area of Ust-Luga in the northwest and the town of Novokuibyshevsk in the Samara region.
Officials in Russia’s Belgorod region also reported a Ukrainian attack that killed one person. Both Russia and Ukraine have denied deliberately targeting civilians.
Ukraine’s drone forces commander said Ukrainian forces struck 54 Russian “shadow fleet” vessels in August as part of efforts to limit oil revenues used to support Moscow’s war effort.
The latest strikes come amid an escalation of long-range attacks by both sides, with military and infrastructure targets, including warehouses, businesses, energy facilities, ports and vessels, increasingly affected in recent months.
