Heavy monsoon rains have caused flooding in parts of Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad, and neighbouring Rawalpindi, submerging roads, flooding homes and forcing authorities to close schools due to rising water levels.
The downpour affected several low-lying areas of the twin cities, disrupting movement and prompting emergency response teams to monitor flood-prone locations. Authorities in Rawalpindi announced the closure of educational institutions as water levels increased in drainage channels.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department reported heavy rainfall across parts of the region, while officials warned of urban flooding risks caused by overflowing drains and rising water levels.
In Rawalpindi, emergency teams were deployed to affected areas, with authorities advising residents to avoid unnecessary travel as rescue and drainage operations continued.
The flooding comes during Pakistan’s monsoon season, which regularly brings heavy rainfall and increases the risk of flash floods and urban flooding in vulnerable areas.
Authorities are continuing to assess the impact of the rainfall and monitor water levels across Islamabad and Rawalpindi as further rain is expected in some parts of the country.
