The Nigeria Union of Journalists, Akwa Ibom State Council, has been selected as one of the venues for the 2026 Akwa Ibom State Sports Festival scheduled to take place in Uyo.
The Patience (Kemi) Umo Eno Hall at the NUJ Press Centre on Information Drive, Uyo, will host competitions in table tennis, karate and kung-fu during the week-long sporting event.
Athletes representing the 31 Local Government Areas of Akwa Ibom State are expected to converge on Uyo for the festival, which will run from Tuesday, September 22 to Tuesday, September 29, 2026.
The Chairman of the Main Organising Committee and Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, said 27 sporting disciplines had been approved for the festival.
Competitions will be held across 10 designated venues in Uyo and its environs, including the Uyo Township Stadium, Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, West Itam Sports Centre, Ibom Hotels & Golf Resort and the Nigerian Christian Institute.
The Uyo Township Stadium will host the opening and closing ceremonies, football and Kokowa, while the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium will host athletics, para-athletics, weightlifting, kickboxing, boxing, chess, scrabble, Ayo and para-powerlifting.
West Itam Sports Centre will host basketball, volleyball, beach volleyball and handball, while tennis competitions will take place at Ibom Hotels & Golf Resort.
The Nigerian Christian Institute will host badminton, wrestling, taekwondo and judo, while QIC Primary School at Itam Flyover will be used for rugby.
Other designated venues are Uyo Sports Club for squash, Community Secondary Commercial School, Ibaiku Itam, for cricket, and Aka Community Secondary School, Uyo, for baseball.
The Main Organising Committee is expected to release the official timetable and fixtures ahead of the festival to enable participating Local Government Areas, athletes, officials and spectators to prepare for the competitions.
The 2026 Akwa Ibom State Sports Festival is expected to provide opportunities for sporting competition, talent discovery and development while promoting unity and healthy competition among young people across the state.
