Public and private primary and secondary schools across Plateau State will officially resume academic activities on Monday, September 14, 2026, following a week-long preventive closure aimed at containing suspected diphtheria cases.
The state government had ordered a temporary shutdown on September 7 to allow public health teams to evaluate community transmission, intensify surveillance, and establish containment protocols.
Announcing the resumption in a statement issued on Friday, the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Rt. Hon. Joyce Lohya Ramnap, affirmed that the decision balances public health safeguards with educational continuity.
“Following the implementation of precautionary and public health measures to contain the reported cases of suspected Diphtheria infection in some parts of the State, the Plateau State Government has directed the resumption of academic activities in all public and private primary and secondary schools across the state with effect from Monday, September 14, 2026,” Ramnap stated.
To mitigate transmission risks upon reopening, the government mandated school proprietors, administrators, and teachers to enforce basic sanitary measures and maintain clean learning environments.
School personnel were also advised to monitor students closely for symptoms and promptly alert local health authorities to any suspected cases.
In addition, state authorities called on parents and guardians to reinforce proper hand hygiene at home, avoid close contact with individuals exhibiting symptoms, and refrain from self-medication or concealing suspected illnesses.
The government urged families and school management to report suspected cases immediately to the nearest health facility, emphasising that early detection remains crucial to preventing further spread across communities.
