The Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (retd.), has said that expanding access to quality education is a critical strategy for addressing terrorism and violent extremism in Nigeria.

Speaking on Sunday during the inauguration of the Kaduna Christian Academy in Ungwan Sunday, Sabon Tasha, Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State, the minister described Nigeria’s security challenges as an “asymmetric war” driven in part by radicalisation and misinformation.

According to him, education remains one of the most effective tools for countering extremist ideology and preventing recruitment into violent groups.

Musa, represented in a statement by his media aide, Leah Katung-Babatunde, said the newly inaugurated school constructed by the Department of State Services (DSS) in partnership with private organisations symbolises a broader security approach that goes beyond force.

He described the facility as a “critical military asset without a single rifle,” stressing that “true and lasting security is anchored on the defeat of ignorance and the conquest of hopelessness.”

The minister commended the DSS for investing in education and community development, saying it reflects a shift in how internal security is understood in Nigeria.

“We see the DSS in a different light as builders of the future. By constructing this academy, the Service has shown that internal security is not just about surveillance and arrest. It is about winning the confidence of the people. A secure mind one that is educated and enlightened is the best defence against the merchants of chaos,” he said.

He urged residents of the community to take ownership of the school and ensure its sustainability, adding that it represents government commitment to long-term stability beyond short-term security operations.

Addressing students, Musa said the institution should serve as a “sanctuary of hope,” where learners are taught not only academic subjects but also values such as citizenship, tolerance, and critical thinking.

To parents, he added that the project reflects government concern for the future of children, noting that security efforts must include investments in human development.

Although the academy was established for the Christian community, the minister said it represents interfaith harmony and inclusive development, noting that a similar facility had earlier been built for the Muslim community.

He also charged school authorities to maintain discipline and urged youths in the area to protect the institution as a shared asset.

The Defence Minister said the government’s counter-terrorism strategy increasingly integrates education and social development, particularly in underserved communities, as part of efforts to reduce radicalisation and strengthen national security.
