The Senate of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), Rivers State, has expelled a final-year student of the Department of English and Literary Studies, Chiamaka Nora Onyewuenyi, following a controversy surrounding statements she allegedly made on social media about her academic project.
The university disclosed the disciplinary action in a statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, Dr Ngozi Okiridu.
According to the institution, Onyewuenyi published social media content claiming that her final-year project focused on Citizenship and that her supervisor had written the project on her behalf.

The university said the claims raised concerns about academic integrity and the public representation of its academic processes.
Okiridu stated that the institution made efforts to persuade the student to withdraw the statements, but she allegedly declined.
The university further claimed that Onyewuenyi subsequently acknowledged that her earlier statements were false and had been made primarily to generate social media content.
Following its consideration of the matter, the university Senate approved her expulsion.
The institution said the disciplinary measure was intended to discourage students from publishing misleading claims about academic activities and university procedures.
However, the statement did not specify the particular provisions of the university’s disciplinary regulations under which the student was expelled.

It also did not indicate whether the student would be permitted to appeal the decision.
As of the time of this report, Onyewuenyi had not publicly responded to the university’s announcement in the information available to RismadarVoice.
The expulsion raises questions about the boundaries of student expression on social media, institutional disciplinary powers and the procedures governing allegations of academic misconduct.
