The of former NBA coach David Fizdale as head coach of Nigeria’s men’s national basketball team has sparked debate among basketball followers, with attention focused on his underwhelming record as a head coach in the NBA.
Although Fizdale won two NBA titles as an assistant coach with the Miami Heat, his managerial career at the highest level produced mixed results.
The American coach recorded 71 wins and 134 losses across 205 regular-season games with the Memphis Grizzlies and the New York Knicks, finishing with a 34.6 per cent winning percentage.
Fizdale began his NBA head coaching journey in 2016 after assistant coaching stints with the Miami Heat, Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Lakers.

His first season with Memphis showed promise as he guided the Grizzlies to a 43-39 regular-season record and a playoff appearance. However, the team was eliminated 4-2 in the first round of the playoffs.
The following campaign proved more difficult as Memphis struggled to seven wins in 19 games before the franchise dismissed him midway through the season.
Fizdale later joined the New York Knicks in 2018 during a rebuilding phase, but his time in New York was largely unsuccessful.
The Knicks finished the 2018-19 season with a disappointing 17-65 record and started the next campaign with only four victories in 22 matches before he was relieved of his duties.
Despite his struggles as a head coach, Fizdale remains highly regarded within NBA circles for his contributions as an assistant, particularly during Miami’s back-to-back championship-winning seasons in 2012 and 2013.
However, his overall head coaching statistics have continued to raise questions about consistency, tactical leadership and his ability to manage high-pressure environments.
Former D’Tigers coach Mike Brown reportedly played a key role in recommending Fizdale for the Nigerian national team job.
Brown coached Nigeria between 2020 and 2021 and led the team to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. His tenure was highlighted by Nigeria’s historic 90-87 exhibition victory over the United States men’s national basketball team in July 2021, making D’Tigers the first African side to defeat Team USA.
Nigeria also recorded an exhibition victory over the Argentine men’s national basketball team during the same period.

However, D’Tigers struggled at the Tokyo Olympics, losing all three group-stage matches against the Australia men’s national basketball team, the Germany men’s national basketball team and the Italy men’s national basketball team.
At the 2021 AfroBasket tournament, Brown’s side was eliminated by the Uganda men’s national basketball team.
For Fizdale, the D’Tigers role marks his first experience coaching a national team, with many observers viewing the assignment as a major test of his managerial credentials.
