At least 10 police personnel, a vigilante member and two civilians have been killed after more than 200 armed bandits attacked a security camp at Makuku in Sakaba Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
The Nigeria Police Force said the attackers, who arrived on motorcycles, stormed the camp at about 6am on Monday, August 10, 2026, targeting personnel of the Special Intervention Squad Platoon 2 and Police Mobile Force 48.
Following a distress call, the Kebbi State Commissioner of Police mobilised reinforcements, with support from the Nigerian Army and Nigerian Air Force operating in Kebbi and neighbouring Katsina State.
The ensuing gun battle lasted for more than two hours, during which security forces repelled the attackers.
The police said at least 17 bandits were neutralised, while several motorcycles used by the attackers were destroyed. The surviving bandits reportedly fled the area, with some seen carrying away the bodies of their associates.
The remains of the fallen police personnel have been deposited at a mortuary in Birnin Kebbi, while their next of kin are being notified.
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, commended the officers for their bravery and directed the immediate reinforcement of security operations across Sakaba Local Government Area and neighbouring communities.
The Force expressed condolences to the families of those killed and assured them of welfare support, while urging residents to remain calm and provide security agencies with credible information.
