The Rivers State Police Command has announced plans to begin strict enforcement of Operation Velvet from August 17, targeting motorists and other road users who violate traffic laws across the state.
The command said the exercise was in line with a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, and was prompted by what it described as growing disregard for traffic regulations.
In a statement on Monday, the command’s spokesperson, Blessing Kaborlo, said the violations had contributed to traffic gridlocks, obstruction of roadways and avoidable risks to road users.
The Commissioner of Police in Rivers, Olugbenga Adepoju, has directed area commanders, divisional police officers and tactical commanders to ensure full enforcement of the operation within their areas of responsibility.
The police said offenders would face sanctions prescribed by law, including arrest, vehicle impoundment and prosecution where necessary.
Mr Adepoju, however, warned police officers deployed for the exercise against extortion, harassment, intimidation and other forms of misconduct.
He directed officers to conduct the operation professionally and in accordance with the law while respecting the rights and dignity of members of the public.
The commissioner also warned that officers found guilty of extortion, brutality, abuse of office or other misconduct would face disciplinary action.
The command urged motorists, commercial drivers, tricycle operators, motorcyclists and other road users to comply with traffic regulations and cooperate with police personnel during the exercise.
It also advised residents to report traffic emergencies, police misconduct, extortion and human rights violations through its designated complaint and emergency channels.
