Algeria came from behind to secure a crucial 2-1 victory over Jordan on Monday night, keeping alive its hopes of progressing to the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
After falling behind in the first half, the North Africans produced a spirited second-half comeback, scoring twice from set pieces to claim their first World Cup win since 2014.
Jordan made history by taking the lead through Nizar Al Rashdan, whose first-half strike gave his country its first-ever advantage in a World Cup match. The goal put the debutants in a strong position, but Algeria responded with increased intensity after the break.

Coach Vladimir Petkovic’s side eventually found an equaliser in the 69th minute when substitute Nadhir Benbouali rose highest to head home a corner kick delivered into the penalty area. The goal shifted momentum firmly in Algeria’s favour as they continued to press for a winner.
Their persistence paid off eight minutes from time when Amine Gouiri capitalised on a loose ball inside the box. His effort took a deflection before finding the back of the net, sparking celebrations among Algerian supporters inside the stadium.
The victory marked a significant milestone for Algeria, who had never previously won a World Cup match after conceding the opening goal. The result also helped them recover from a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Argentina in their tournament opener.
With three points now secured, Algeria remain in contention for a place in the knockout phase. A victory against Austria in their final Group J fixture on Saturday could be enough to secure qualification.

For Jordan, the defeat ends any hopes of advancing beyond the group stage. Having also lost their opening match 3-1 to Austria, the Middle Eastern side have now suffered back-to-back defeats despite showing determination and competitiveness in their maiden World Cup appearance.
