The race for the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup is intensifying, with six countries already securing places in the Round of 32, while four teams have been eliminated following the conclusion of the second round of group-stage matches.

As of Tuesday morning, hosts Mexico and the United States have advanced to the next phase alongside Germany, Argentina, France, and Norway after impressive performances in their respective groups.

Mexico became the first nation to book a place in the knockout rounds after recording consecutive victories against South Africa and South Korea to top Group A. The hosts are now set to face one of the best third-placed teams in the Round of 32.

The United States also confirmed qualification after back-to-back wins over Paraguay and Australia in Group D. Mauricio Pochettino’s side secured top spot in the group and will continue their campaign in the knockout phase.

Germany emerged as the first European team to advance after defeating Curaçao and Côte d’Ivoire in Group E. The Germans sealed first place in the group and remain among the tournament favourites.

Defending champions Argentina have also progressed, thanks largely to the brilliance of captain Lionel Messi, who has scored five goals in two matches. Victories over Algeria and Austria ensured Argentina’s place in the next round as Group J leaders.

France joined the list of qualified teams after dominant wins against Senegal and Iraq. Star forward Kylian Mbappé has been instrumental in their success, scoring two goals in each of France’s opening matches.

Norway became the sixth team to secure qualification after overcoming Iraq and Senegal, guaranteeing their place in the knockout stage.

Meanwhile, four nations have seen their World Cup dreams come to an end. Haiti, Tunisia, Türkiye, and Jordan have all been eliminated after failing to accumulate enough points to remain in contention.

Haiti exited the competition following defeats to Scotland and Brazil, while Tunisia’s losses to Sweden and Japan ended their campaign.

Türkiye were knocked out after suffering consecutive defeats to Australia and Paraguay, while Jordan’s losses to Austria and Algeria confirmed their elimination from the tournament.
