Chinese football fans are once again watching the World Cup without their national team, but many have found an unexpected figure to support: referee Ma Ning.

China has not qualified for the men’s World Cup since 2002, but interest in the tournament remains strong across the country, with millions following matches through broadcasts, fan gatherings and social media.

At a viewing event outside the Argentine Embassy in Beijing, fans celebrated Argentina’s 3–0 win over Algeria, with supporters wearing jerseys, sharing meals and cheering for star players such as Lionel Messi.

“I’m used to it. Maybe in 10 years. For now, we have Messi,” said 34-year-old fan Miko Zhang.

Despite China’s absence, football remains hugely popular. State broadcaster CCTV data reportedly showed tens of millions of viewers tuned in for early tournament matches, reflecting sustained national interest in the sport.

Many Chinese fans have shifted their attention to Ma Ning, one of 52 referees selected for the tournament and the only Chinese official on the World Cup list. Known locally as “Card Master” for his strict officiating style, Ma is set to make his World Cup debut in the match between Ecuador and Curaçao in Kansas City.

News of his appointment has gone viral on Chinese social media, with related hashtags attracting millions of views.

“He stands out there and that’s enough for me,” said Shanghai-based fan Hu Qiyun, adding that Ma’s presence gives supporters a symbolic national connection to the tournament.

Ma has built a strong online following and has also attracted brand partnerships in China, unusual for a referee, with endorsements spanning technology and consumer goods.

Beyond fandom, the World Cup has also boosted related consumer activity in China, with increased sales of football merchandise and spikes in late-night food and drink orders during matches.

While fans continue to support foreign teams such as Argentina, many say they still hope China will eventually return to the global stage. “By the time I’m around 35 and well into my career, I hope China can qualify again,” Hu said.
