Co-hosts Mexico opened their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a 2-0 victory over South Africa in an action-packed Group A encounter that saw the African side finish the match with nine players.
Mexico took control of the game from the outset, dominating possession and creating several chances. Their early pressure paid off when Julian Quiñones broke the deadlock after an impressive attacking display. The forward had earlier struck the post as the hosts pushed for an opening goal before halftime.

South Africa’s hopes of a comeback suffered a major setback shortly after the interval when Yaya Sithole was shown a red card for bringing down Brian Gutierrez outside the penalty area, denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.
With the numerical advantage, Mexico increased their dominance and doubled their lead through Raúl Jiménez, who headed home from close range.
South Africa’s disciplinary troubles deepened later in the match when captain Themba Zwane received a red card for violent conduct, reducing his side to nine men.

The victory gives Mexico a winning start to their World Cup campaign and an early advantage in Group A, while South Africa face an uphill task in their remaining group-stage matches after a disappointing opening defeat.
