The United States Mission in Nigeria has announced that the U.S. Embassy Abuja and the U.S. Consulate General Lagos will be closed on Monday, May 25, 2026, in observance of Memorial Day.
The announcement was made through the mission’s official X social media account, where it stated that the closure aligns with the annual United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May.

According to the statement, the holiday is dedicated to honouring American military personnel who lost their lives while serving their country.
“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Monday, May 25, 2026, in observance of Memorial Day – a U.S. federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May in honour of U.S. military personnel who lost their lives in service of their country,” the mission stated.
Memorial Day is regarded as one of the most solemn national observances in the United States and is traditionally marked with tributes to fallen soldiers, including visits to cemeteries and war memorials.
As part of the annual commemoration, volunteers across the United States often place American flags on the graves of deceased military personnel buried in national cemeteries as a sign of honour and remembrance.

According to information gathered, the temporary closure means that routine consular and embassy services in Abuja and Lagos will resume after the holiday observance.
