The United States Army has scheduled the execution of former Army Major Nidal Hasan, who was convicted of killing 13 people and wounding 32 others in the 2009 mass shooting at Fort Hood, Texas.
Acting Secretary of the Army Adam Telle said Hasan is scheduled to be executed by firing squad at Fort Hood on December 3, 2026, at 1 p.m. Central Time.
The announcement followed President Donald Trump’s approval of the execution after Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth recommended that Hasan’s death sentence be carried out by firing squad.
Hasan, a former Army psychiatrist, was convicted by a military jury in 2013 on 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder arising from the November 5, 2009 attack.
The shooting occurred at a military processing facility at Fort Hood, where soldiers were undergoing preparations connected with deployment.

Hasan was subsequently sentenced to death.
If the execution proceeds as scheduled, it will be the first carried out by the United States military since 1961 and the first military execution by firing squad since 1945.
Military death sentences are rare in the United States and require presidential approval before they can be carried out.
Although the execution has now been scheduled, further legal proceedings could affect whether it takes place on December 3. Hasan may still seek habeas corpus review in the civilian federal court system.
The case has gone through years of military appellate proceedings. The US Supreme Court declined to review Hasan’s case in 2025, leaving his military conviction and death sentence in place.

Hasan remains on military death row pending the scheduled execution.
