Hollywood actors Susan Sarandon and Hannah Einbinder were among protesters detained by police in New York on Thursday during a demonstration against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The protest took place as Netanyahu prepared to address the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Footage from AFP showed police officers placing Sarandon, known for her roles in Thelma & Louise and Dead Man Walking, in handcuffs during the demonstration.
Einbinder, who stars in the television series Hacks, was also reportedly taken into custody.
The demonstration was organised by Jewish Voice for Peace, with protesters displaying placards calling for an end to US arms supplies to Israel and what they described as genocide in Gaza.
A spokesperson for the New York Police Department said officers responded to an “unscheduled demonstration” after protesters blocked an intersection.
According to the spokesperson, members of the NYPD Community Affairs Bureau repeatedly warned demonstrators to leave the area.
“Multiple individuals who didn’t comply were taken into custody,” the spokesperson said, without disclosing the number of arrests.
The arrests occurred shortly before Netanyahu delivered his address to the UN General Assembly, where dozens of delegates walked out in protest as he began speaking.
Netanyahu used the speech to defend Israel’s military campaign in Gaza and criticise countries that have recently recognised a Palestinian state, including Britain and France.
He also accused some of Israel’s critics of supporting positions hostile to the country.
Sarandon has previously spoken publicly against Israel’s military campaign in Gaza and has participated in demonstrations concerning the conflict.
Earlier this month, the actress said at the Venice Film Festival that she had lost acting opportunities because of her views on the war.
She said some agencies had continued to discourage people from hiring her because of her outspoken position, while adding that she believed public understanding of the situation had changed.
Einbinder has also publicly expressed support for Palestinians and criticism of Israel’s conduct in Gaza.
