US President Donald Trump has rejected calls for international oversight of artificial intelligence, describing efforts to establish a global regulatory framework as a “globalist scheme” aimed at controlling the technology.
Trump made his position known on Tuesday while addressing the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The US president said Washington would not support attempts to place artificial intelligence under a global system of regulation, arguing that the United States should retain control over how the technology is developed and deployed.
During the address, Trump also announced a proposed change in US government terminology, saying official communications would use the expression “Super Intelligence” instead of “Artificial Intelligence.”
He argued that the word “artificial” did not accurately reflect the capabilities of the technology.
Trump expressed hope that other countries would also adopt the new terminology, which he said better represented the growing capabilities of AI systems.
The comments came as governments and international organisations continue discussions over the need for common rules governing artificial intelligence, including issues relating to safety, security, innovation and accountability.
Trump’s position signals continued US opposition to efforts aimed at establishing a single international framework for regulating the rapidly developing technology.
