Tesla has unveiled its two-seater Cybercab autonomous vehicle at an event in Texas, giving a closer look at the robotaxi model that Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk has identified as a key part of the company’s ambition to become a major force in driverless transportation.
The electric vehicle maker presented the Cybercab as a purpose-built autonomous vehicle designed to operate without traditional driving controls. The model features no steering wheel or pedals and is intended to become a central part of Tesla’s expanding robotaxi network.
Tesla currently operates a limited robotaxi service using autonomous Model Y vehicles, while the Cybercab is expected to gradually take a larger role in the company’s self-driving operations.
The launch comes as Tesla seeks to strengthen its position in the autonomous vehicle market, with Musk arguing that driverless technology will transform the company beyond traditional electric vehicle manufacturing.
The Cybercab rollout has drawn attention from regulators and industry observers, particularly over safety requirements and the challenges involved in deploying vehicles without manual controls. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has said it is evaluating the rollout.
Tesla’s autonomous vehicle plans face competition from other companies developing robotaxi services, including firms that have already deployed larger fleets of self-driving vehicles in several cities.
The company has said the Cybercab represents a major step toward a future where autonomous vehicles provide commercial transportation services at scale.
