Ticket prices for Sunday’s US Open men’s singles final between American Ben Shelton and Germany’s Alexander Zverev have fallen by 27 per cent over the past three days, despite the historic significance of the championship match.
The cheapest available ticket for the final at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York was priced at $388, according to TicketData.com, down from higher levels recorded earlier in the week.
The entry-level price remained relatively stable in the 24 hours after Shelton defeated fellow American Frances Tiafoe in their semifinal. It briefly fell to $361 on Saturday afternoon before rising to $400 later in the evening and subsequently declining to $388.
The final has attracted considerable attention because Shelton is seeking to become the first American man in 23 years to win a Grand Slam singles title.
The 23-year-old eighth seed is also the first Black American man to reach the US Open men’s singles final since Arthur Ashe won the title in 1972. The championship match will take place at the stadium named in Ashe’s honour.
Shelton is appearing in his first Grand Slam final and will face a significant challenge against top seed Zverev, who won his first Grand Slam title at the French Open earlier this year.
Zverev, 29, has also dominated their previous meetings, winning all five of their career encounters. Those matches took place between August 2024 and November 2025, with none coming at a Grand Slam tournament.
For Shelton, victory would mark a major milestone in his career and make him the first American man to win a Grand Slam singles title since Andy Roddick captured the US Open crown in 2003.
He is also the first Black American man to reach a Grand Slam men’s singles final since MaliVai Washington reached the Wimbledon final in 1996.
Shelton has acknowledged the significance of the occasion, particularly the sacrifices made by his parents throughout his career, and has called on American supporters to create a strong atmosphere during Sunday’s final.
The tournament has nevertheless seen lower ticket prices overall compared with the same stage last year. TicketData.com said the average entry-level ticket price during the first 15 days of this year’s tournament was $246, compared with $313 at the same point in 2025.
Ticket prices for the women’s singles final between Elena Rybakina and Aryna Sabalenka also declined, with the cheapest available ticket settling at $314, about 20 per cent lower than three days earlier.
Rybakina went on to defeat two-time defending champion Sabalenka 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 to claim her first US Open title.
Attention now turns to the men’s final, where Shelton will attempt to complete a historic breakthrough while Zverev seeks to add a second Grand Slam title to his rapidly developing record.
Beyond the championship itself, the final represents a significant moment for American men’s tennis, with Shelton carrying the hopes of the home crowd into a match that could further define his emergence on the sport’s biggest stage.
