A dramatic late equaliser from Ainsley Maitland-Niles denied Manchester United victory as Everton fought back to secure a 2-2 draw in their Premier League clash at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Sunday.
Manchester United appeared set to claim a second consecutive league victory after Benjamin Šeško restored their lead in the 88th minute, but Maitland-Niles produced a stunning long-range strike deep into stoppage time to rescue a point for Everton.
The match ended 2-2 after an entertaining second half following a goalless opening period.
United took the lead immediately after the restart when Bryan Mbeumo scored a brilliant solo goal in the 46th minute, finishing after receiving a pass from Kobbie Mainoo.
Everton responded late in the game, with Tyrique George equalising in the 83rd minute after an assist from Hayden Hackney to put the home side back on level terms.
Manchester United regained the advantage five minutes later when Šeško powered a header past Jordan Pickford in the 88th minute. Luke Shaw provided the assist after combining with Bruno Fernandes in the build-up.
However, Everton refused to surrender and secured a dramatic point when Maitland-Niles fired a powerful 25-yard effort into the top corner in the sixth minute of stoppage time, leaving United goalkeeper Senne Lammens with no chance.
The result means Manchester United missed the opportunity to record back-to-back Premier League wins, while Everton claimed a valuable point after showing resilience against Michael Carrick’s side.
The draw continues Everton’s unbeaten start to the season, while United will now turn their attention to recovering from the late setback in their upcoming fixtures.
