The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed reports alleging that it plans to hold a convention to affirm former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan as its presidential candidate, describing the claims as false and misleading.

In a press release issued on Friday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, said no such convention, meeting, or process had been approved or endorsed by the leadership or any recognised organ of the PDP.

“The Party wishes to categorically state that no such convention, meeting, or process has been scheduled, approved, or endorsed,” the statement read.

The PDP urged party members, supporters, stakeholders, and the general public to disregard the reports, which it said were intended to create confusion within the political space.

The opposition party further stated that it had already concluded all its primary elections, including governorship, state assembly, national assembly, and presidential primaries, in line with the Electoral Act, INEC guidelines, and the party’s constitution.

According to the statement, all the exercises were peacefully conducted under the supervision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The party also called on former President Jonathan to publicly distance himself from what it described as a “charade” to protect the integrity of the democratic process and preserve his reputation.

“We respectfully call on former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to publicly dissociate himself from this charade,” the statement added.

The PDP equally urged security agencies to investigate the source of the reports and take action against those responsible, accusing them of attempting to create political tension in the country.

The party reaffirmed its commitment to due process, internal democracy, and the rule of law, stressing that only official communications from authorised party officials should be regarded as authentic.
