The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has placed Lagos State, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Rivers, Kano, Enugu and several other states on high alert following the outbreak of the deadly Bundibugyo strain of Ebola Virus Disease in parts of East and Central Africa.

The agency warned that Nigeria faces a high risk of importing the virus due to increased international travel, porous borders and regional movement across African countries.

Although no case has been confirmed in Nigeria, the NCDC disclosed that more than 1,000 suspected cases and 247 deaths have already been recorded in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Health authorities expressed concern over the Bundibugyo strain, noting that there is currently no approved vaccine or targeted treatment for the variant.

The NCDC also advised healthcare workers across the country to remain vigilant, stressing that early symptoms of the disease may resemble malaria or Lassa fever, making early detection difficult.

The agency urged Nigerians to maintain proper hygiene, promptly report suspected symptoms, and avoid unnecessary contact with infected persons as efforts continue to strengthen surveillance at entry points and health facilities nationwide.
