Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has distanced himself from protests staged by aggrieved members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) over the outcome of the party’s recent primary elections in Lagos State.

Obasa warned protesters against dragging his name into demonstrations or rallies related to the disputed primaries, describing allegations linking him to the protests as false and misleading.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Speaker urged party members not to associate him with any form of protest arising from the primary election process.

The warning followed protests by some APC members from areas including Badagry, Mushin, Amuwo-Odofin, Eti-Osa, Somolu, Ajeromi-Ifelodun and Oshodi-Isolo, who gathered at the party’s state secretariat on Tuesday to challenge the conduct and outcome of the primaries.

The protesters accused some party leaders of manipulating results in parts of the state and demanded a review of the exercise.

Following the demonstration, rumours emerged alleging that Obasa was among those sponsoring the protests.

Reacting to the claims, the Speaker denied any involvement and insisted he had no reason to support or finance such actions.

“It is foolhardy, malicious, misleading and baseless for anybody to assume or imply that I will import or mobilise protesters from different local governments to the secretariat. To achieve what exactly?” Obasa said.

He added that he was not a candidate in the disputed election and therefore had no interest in sponsoring protests against the outcome.

“I am not a candidate in the disputed election, so why and how will I devote such an amount of money to organising protests?” he asked.

Obasa maintained that he has no connection with the demonstrations and urged party members and the public to disregard reports linking him to the protests.

The APC has yet to officially respond to the grievances raised by the protesters regarding the conduct of the primary elections.
