Six aspirants under the All Progressives Congress (APC) have stepped down from the race for the Kano Central senatorial ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections, endorsing former Kano State governor, Ibrahim Shekarau as their consensus candidate.

The decision followed a lengthy high-level political meeting convened in Abuja on Sunday and facilitated by Abba Kabir Yusuf, which brought together key stakeholders and contenders for the party’s senatorial ticket.

At the end of the discussions, the six aspirants — Usman Bala, Sha’aban Sharada, Muhammad Zango, Danyaro Yakasai, Abbas Sani Abbas, and Shehu Isa Driver — announced their withdrawal from the contest, citing the need to preserve unity, peace, and political stability in Kano State ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking after the meeting, they explained that their collective decision was driven by the desire to strengthen cohesion within the party and support a more coordinated political front in the senatorial district.

The endorsement of Shekarau was described as a strategic move aimed at consolidating support and reducing internal competition within the APC structure in Kano Central.

Confirming the development in a social media update, Governor Yusuf’s special assistant on social media, Salisu Kosawa, noted that the meeting ended with a unified agreement backing Shekarau as the preferred candidate.

Shekarau, a former governor of Kano State (2003–2011) and former Minister of Education, recently joined the APC in April after leaving the Peoples Democratic Party. His defection was publicly announced at his residence in Kano in the presence of party supporters and allies.

His entry into the APC and subsequent endorsement now position him as a central figure in the unfolding political realignments ahead of the 2027 polls in Kano Central.
