Nigeria has formally commemorated the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations with Mexico, marking five decades of sustained bilateral engagement – anchored on mutual respect, shared global priorities.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that diplomatic ties between Nigeria and Mexico were officially established on April 14, 1976.

The Ministry described the relationship as “stable and mutually beneficial,” built on the principles of sovereignty, non-interference, and a common commitment to international peace and cooperation.

Over the years, both nations have maintained close coordination within multilateral platforms, particularly the United Nations, while steadily expanding collaboration across key sectors. These include trade and investment, energy, agriculture, education, cultural exchange, and technical cooperation.

Recent engagements have increasingly focused on economic diplomacy, with both countries seeking to deepen private-sector participation and diversify trade. Emerging areas of cooperation, such as renewable energy and sustainable development initiatives, are also gaining prominence in bilateral discussions.

The Nigerian government emphasized that continuous dialogue, institutional partnerships, and strong people-to-people connections have played a critical role in strengthening ties.

It noted that the relationship reflects shared aspirations for inclusive economic growth, sustainable development, and enhanced South-South cooperation.

As both countries celebrate the golden jubilee of their diplomatic relations, the Ministry reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to further strengthening ties through high-level engagements and strategic partnerships.

It also extended congratulations to the governments and citizens of both nations, expressing optimism about greater mutual benefits in the years ahead.
