Heavy rainfall has triggered widespread flooding across Bangkok, Thailand, disrupting traffic, stranding vehicles and forcing some residents to evacuate their homes.
The prolonged rainfall, which began on Thursday afternoon and continued into Saturday morning, submerged several roads and brought traffic to a standstill in parts of the Thai capital.
Officials said rainfall accumulation exceeded 20 centimetres in major canals across Bangkok, with central and eastern parts of the city among the areas worst affected.
The Thailand Meteorological Department warned that heavy rainfall could continue across much of the country through Sunday due to a strong low-pressure system over the central region and strengthening southwest monsoon conditions.
More than 84,000 people across 21 provinces had been affected by flooding as of Saturday, with central Thailand particularly impacted.
Authorities said emergency warnings had been sent to residents in affected areas through the country’s cell-broadcast alert system.
In Bangkok, persistent downpours continued through Friday and into Saturday, flooding major roads and leaving some vehicles stranded after motorists were unable to navigate rising water.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said further heavy rainfall was expected through Saturday but expressed hope that floodwaters would recede once the rain eased.
City authorities were working to drain accumulated water from affected areas as quickly as possible.
Several temporary shelters have also been established for residents forced to leave their homes.
Some government facilities have been opened to provide parking spaces for vehicles as authorities continue efforts to manage the impact of the flooding.
Officials are monitoring weather conditions as the threat of further heavy rainfall continues across Bangkok and other parts of Thailand.
