United States President Donald Trump has signed two new executive orders seeking to limit birthright citizenship, weeks after the Supreme Court rejected his earlier attempt to restrict the constitutional right.
The latest orders are narrower than Trump’s original policy, which sought to deny automatic citizenship to some children born in the United States to undocumented immigrants and temporary visa holders.
One of the new directives seeks to expand an existing exception that excludes children of foreign diplomats or invading forces from automatic citizenship.
The second order directs the Secretary of State and the Secretary of Homeland Security to take measures against so-called “birth tourism”, in which foreign nationals travel to the United States primarily to give birth.
Trump criticised the Supreme Court’s recent decision, describing it as unfortunate and insisting that his administration was adjusting its approach to the issue.
The President’s original executive order, signed on the first day of his second term in January 2025, sought to reinterpret the 14th Amendment and narrow eligibility for birthright citizenship.
However, the Supreme Court ruled in June that the administration’s attempt was unlawful, citing the Constitution’s Citizenship Clause.
The latest executive orders are expected to face fresh legal challenges as Trump continues his efforts to tighten US immigration policy.
