Argentina football legend Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from the national team, bringing an end to a historic international career that lasted more than two decades.
The 39-year-old forward confirmed his decision in a statement shared on Instagram, saying he had given the matter considerable thought following the conclusion of the recent World Cup campaign.
“After the time that has passed since the final, and after giving it a lot of thought, I want to let everyone know that I am retiring from the National Team,” Messi said in his message.
Messi leaves the Argentina setup as one of the country’s most decorated players, having captained the team to major honours, including the 2022 FIFA World Cup and Copa América triumphs.
The Inter Miami forward’s international journey began in 2005, and he went on to become Argentina’s most-capped player and leading goalscorer, recording more than 200 appearances and over 120 goals for the national side.
The announcement marks the conclusion of a career that included years of criticism and disappointment before Messi eventually delivered Argentina’s long-awaited World Cup success in Qatar in 2022.
Messi thanked his teammates, coaches, family and supporters for their backing throughout his time representing the country, adding that he would continue supporting the national team from outside the pitch.
His retirement from international football closes one of the most significant chapters in Argentina’s football history, with the national team now expected to enter a new era led by emerging talents.
