Vice President Kashim Shettima has warned that Nigeria will no longer tolerate the dehumanisation and mistreatment of its citizens in South Africa, condemning xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks against Nigerians and other African nationals.
Shettima stated this in Luanda, Angola, while speaking with journalists shortly before departing for Nigeria after representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union.
The Vice President said Nigeria remained committed to resolving issues with South Africa through dialogue and peaceful engagement but would continue to speak firmly whenever the safety and dignity of Nigerians were threatened.
He recalled Nigeria’s role in the liberation struggles in Southern Africa, saying the country was deeply concerned by reports of humiliation and attacks against fellow Africans.
According to him, the Nigerian government and its people would no longer accept situations in which Nigerians were subjected to degrading and unacceptable treatment.
Shettima, however, stressed the need for continued engagement between Nigeria and South Africa, saying both countries must maintain robust conversations to resolve areas of concern without escalating tensions.
The Vice President also urged South African authorities to protect lives and respect human dignity while enforcing the country’s immigration laws and policies.
Shettima has since departed Luanda for Nigeria following the conclusion of the African Union summit.
