The Lagos State Police Command has identified and commenced disciplinary proceedings against Inspector Osumah Frank over a viral video in which he made ethnically charged and partisan remarks about Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi and the possibility of an Igbo person becoming Nigeria’s president.
The Command confirmed the officer’s identity on Friday following widespread reactions to the video, which circulated on social media earlier in the week.
In the footage, Frank was seen in police uniform making remarks opposing Obi’s presidential ambition and claiming that an Igbo person could not become president of Nigeria.
Lagos State Police spokesperson SP Abimbola Adebisi said the Command had begun appropriate disciplinary action against the officer in accordance with established Nigeria Police Force regulations.
The Command distanced itself from Frank’s comments, stressing that they were made in his personal capacity and did not represent the position, views or official disposition of either the Lagos State Police Command or the Nigeria Police Force.
Commissioner of Police Tijani Fatai also reiterated that police personnel are expected to maintain professionalism, civility, discipline and respect for members of the public at all times.
“Wearing the Police uniform comes with the responsibility to uphold the dignity and integrity of the Force,” the Command said.
It added that conduct capable of bringing the Force into disrepute or undermining public confidence would not be tolerated.
The development follows days of public criticism after the video surfaced, with concerns raised over the political neutrality and professional conduct expected of serving police personnel, particularly ahead of the 2027 general election.
The disciplinary process will determine what sanctions, if any, will be imposed on the officer under Nigeria Police Force regulations.
