The Kwara State Police Command has denied claims that its personnel shot a motorcyclist during an encounter at Oyun Bridge in Ilorin, saying the rider instead collided with an officer during a routine stop-and-search operation.
In a statement on Wednesday, the command’s spokesperson, Toun Ejire-Adeyemi, said no one was shot during the incident and urged the public to disregard unverified claims accompanying a video circulating online.
According to the police, 23-year-old motorcyclist Abdurasaq Lukman was riding at high speed when he allegedly knocked down Corporal Saka Azeez, who was among officers conducting patrol and stop-and-search duties around the bridge.
Ejire-Adeyemi said the collision left Azeez with serious head injuries and a fracture, while Lukman sustained minor injuries.
“Other officers at the scene immediately responded and conveyed both the injured officer and the motorcyclist to a medical facility for treatment,” she said.
The spokesperson said Lukman was treated and discharged but remained in police custody to assist with investigations into the incident.
Azeez remained hospitalised and was undergoing further medical examinations and scans to determine the extent of his head injury, according to the command.
Ejire-Adeyemi said claims circulating alongside footage of the incident that police personnel had shot the motorcyclist were inaccurate.
Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, urged residents to verify information before circulating it on social media.
He said the command recognised legitimate public concerns about police activities but maintained that verifying claims was necessary to prevent misinformation and unnecessary anxiety.
