The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to revive viable abandoned housing projects across the country and make the completed estates available to Nigerians.
The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Engr. Muttaqa Rabe Darma, disclosed this on Wednesday during an inspection of the abandoned National Housing Programme estate at Kubwa-Karsana in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
Darma expressed concern over the continued abandonment of housing projects funded with taxpayers’ money, saying the government would no longer allow such public assets to deteriorate.
He said the ministry was currently conducting a nationwide assessment of abandoned housing estates to determine their level of completion and identify what would be required to bring the projects to completion.
According to him, the initiative is part of efforts to increase housing supply, reduce the country’s housing deficit and advance the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Housing Agenda.
“We cannot continue to allow housing projects that were started with public funds to remain abandoned. These are assets belonging to Nigerians, and our responsibility is to ensure that they are completed, functional and occupied by the people who need them,” he said.
Darma said the government would focus on projects considered viable, upgrading and completing them before allocating the houses transparently to Nigerians.
“Our target is clear. Where projects are viable, we will upgrade them, complete them and ensure that Nigerians can benefit from them. We are determined to deliver more homes and reduce the housing deficit before the end of 2026,” the minister said.
He explained that completing abandoned housing projects would complement the development of new estates and enable the government to expand housing delivery more efficiently.
The inspection formed part of the ministry’s nationwide assessment of federal housing assets, with the exercise expected to guide government decisions on the completion and allocation of the abandoned projects.
