The Niger State Police Command has warned politicians, political supporters and other individuals against destroying campaign posters, banners and billboards belonging to rival candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The command also cautioned against attacks on political opponents and disruption of campaign activities, warning that those found responsible would face arrest and prosecution.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, issued the warning in a statement on Saturday following reports of increasing incidents of political intolerance across the state.

According to the command, some individuals have allegedly engaged in the deliberate destruction and unlawful removal of campaign materials, while others have reportedly attacked political party members during political activities.

The police condemned the incidents, describing them as unlawful acts capable of threatening public peace and undermining the electoral process.

Abiodun explained that destroying, defacing or unlawfully removing another candidate’s campaign posters and billboards could constitute criminal mischief or malicious damage under applicable laws.

He warned that political affiliation or disagreement with an opponent did not justify attacks on individuals or destruction of their property.

The command also cautioned against carrying offensive weapons to political gatherings or engaging in activities capable of disrupting lawful campaigns.

The Commissioner of Police in Niger State, Adamu Abdullahi Elleman, has directed area commanders, tactical commanders and divisional police officers to intensify surveillance of political activities across the state.

The officers were instructed to take preventive measures, investigate reported incidents and ensure that individuals found culpable are brought before the appropriate authorities.

The command further warned that political sponsors and individuals who recruit, encourage or facilitate attacks on opponents or their campaign materials could face prosecution where investigations establish their involvement.

It maintained that all political parties and candidates are entitled to equal protection under the law, irrespective of their political affiliations.

The warning follows a similar nationwide directive issued by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, on November 4.

The Nigeria Police Force had directed commissioners of police across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to prevent attacks on campaign materials and investigate reported cases.

The Niger command urged political parties, candidates and their supporters to conduct their activities peacefully, respect opposing political views and avoid actions capable of provoking violence.

It also called on residents to report threats, intimidation and destruction of campaign materials to security agencies.

The police reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining public order and providing a secure environment for lawful political activities ahead of the elections.
