Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has said Tehran is prepared to immediately reciprocate if the United States returns to its commitments under a June agreement intended to end hostilities between the two countries.
Pezeshkian made the statement on Tuesday while addressing a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Kyrgyzstan, according to the Iranian presidency.
He said Iran remained willing to honour its obligations under the agreement if Washington also returned to the commitments it made.
“I state explicitly that if the United States returns to its commitments under the aforementioned memorandum of understanding, the Islamic Republic of Iran will immediately take reciprocal action,” Pezeshkian said.
The agreement was negotiated as an attempt to halt months of confrontation between Tehran and Washington following US and Israeli strikes on Iran in late February. The attacks reportedly killed former Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The understanding subsequently broke down, with Iran and the United States accusing each other of breaching its terms.
Pezeshkian’s latest comments came amid renewed tensions over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping route that has remained at the centre of the dispute between the two countries.
Iran has maintained its closure of the strategic waterway while indicating that it would resume its obligations under the June agreement if the United States does the same.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also called on Washington on Monday to return to the commitments contained in the agreement.
“The United States must return to its commitments and to what their president signed,” Araghchi said.
He added that if Washington did so, “everything can be put back on the right track.”
