At least 25 people have died, and 44 others sustained injuries after a passenger bus plunged into a ravine in northern Algeria.

The accident occurred on Friday in the El Karma area of Boumerdes Province, about 50 kilometres east of Algiers.

According to Algeria’s Civil Protection agency, the bus was travelling from Sétif when the driver reportedly lost control, causing the vehicle to veer off the highway and tumble into a deep ravine.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene, evacuating survivors to nearby hospitals while rescue operations continued for several hours.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash.

Following the incident, Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb visited the crash site to assess the situation and meet with emergency personnel coordinating rescue efforts.

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune declared three days of national mourning in honour of the victims.

Official figures show that 3,838 people died and more than 37,000 others were injured in road crashes across the country in 2025.
