A two-storey residential building has collapsed in Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State, with no deaths reported.
The incident occurred recently at Inyaba-Umudim, Nnewi, according to the state Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Chijioke Ojukwu.
Ojukwu, who inspected the site on Monday, described the collapse as unfortunate but expressed relief that no life was lost.
He said the affected structure was allegedly erected without the required approval from the ministry and was poorly constructed.
According to the commissioner, the building was constructed along the perimeter wall of an existing three-storey structure in the same compound.
He disclosed that occupants of the adjoining three-storey building had been issued an evacuation notice to enable authorities to conduct an integrity assessment and ensure their safety.
“The building was poorly constructed and was built without the requisite approval of the ministry,” Ojukwu said.
He added that all buildings within the neighbourhood would undergo mandatory integrity tests, with structures found to be unsafe subjected to demolition.
The commissioner also announced plans for a wider enforcement exercise across the state.
He said buildings constructed on the perimeter fences of existing structures, those that contravene mandatory setback requirements and structures erected without the necessary government approval would face demolition.
Ojukwu said the government was taking the measures to prevent further building failures and protect residents from avoidable disasters.
Authorities are expected to complete the structural assessments before determining the fate of the affected and neighbouring buildings.
