The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, on Monday led members of the Commission’s delegation on a visit to key electoral institutions in South Korea as part of activities for the International Election Observation Programme (IEOP) for the country’s Nationwide Simultaneous Local Elections.
The delegation visited the headquarters of the South Korean National Election Commission (NEC) and the Korean Civic Education Institute (KOCIE), where they engaged with election officials on electoral administration, technology, and civic education.

The visit formed part of INEC’s participation in the international observation programme and provided an opportunity for Nigerian electoral officials to study South Korea’s electoral processes and best practices.
According to information made available by the Commission, discussions focused on the evolution of the Korean electoral system, election management procedures, technological innovations, and institutional frameworks supporting credible elections.
Officials of the South Korean NEC and KOCIE delivered presentations highlighting the country’s electoral development, including the deployment of technology in voter management, election operations, and results administration.
The presentations also examined civic education strategies and institutional mechanisms designed to promote voter awareness and participation in the democratic process.
The engagement enabled members of the Nigerian delegation to gain insights into South Korea’s experience in leveraging technology and administrative reforms to enhance electoral efficiency and transparency.

The visit is expected to contribute to knowledge exchange between both electoral management bodies and support ongoing efforts to strengthen electoral administration through the adoption of global best practices.
INEC has consistently participated in international election observation and study programmes as part of its efforts to improve electoral processes and build institutional capacity.
South Korea’s Nationwide Simultaneous Local Elections bring together multiple local government contests under a single electoral process and are widely regarded as a model for efficient election administration and voter engagement.
