Four Nigerian-American politicians have been reported as winners in the United States midterm elections held on Tuesday, November 3, while the outcome of another candidate’s contest in Georgia remains uncertain.
The reported winners are Will Jawando in Maryland, Junior Ezeonu in Texas, Oye Owolewa in Washington, DC, and Carol Kazeem in Pennsylvania.
In Maryland, Democrat Will Jawando was reported to have defeated Republican Esther Wells in the Montgomery County executive election.
Figures attributed to NBC Washington showed Jawando receiving 237,383 votes, representing 78.15 per cent, against Wells’s 66,383 votes, or 21.85 per cent, with 72 per cent of expected votes counted.
Jawando, whose father is Nigerian, previously served on the Montgomery County Council.
In Texas, Nigerian-born Democrat Junior Ezeonu secured the state House of Representatives District 101 seat after defeating incumbent Chris Turner in the Democratic primary.
Ezeonu, who previously served on the Grand Prairie City Council, faced no Republican opponent on the November general-election ballot.

Meanwhile, Oye Owolewa was reported to have won an at-large seat on the Council of the District of Columbia.
Owolewa, a pharmacist whose parents are Nigerian immigrants, previously served as Washington’s elected shadow representative, advocating for the district’s admission as a US state.
He had secured the Democratic nomination during the June primary election.
In Pennsylvania, Democrat Carol Kazeem was reported to have retained her seat representing District 159 in the state House of Representatives.
Kazeem, who was first elected in 2022, contested against Republican Michael Bannon.
However, the outcome of the Georgia House of Representatives District 110 contest involving Nigerian-born Democrat Segun Adeyina remained unresolved in the early figures cited.
An election tracker showed Adeyina leading Republican Charles Lollar by 1,353 votes to 689, with approximately eight per cent of expected votes counted.

The limited count was insufficient to establish the outcome.
The November 3 elections included contests for all 435 seats in the US House of Representatives, 35 Senate seats, governorships, state legislatures and local offices.
While the reported performances highlight the participation of Nigerian-Americans in US politics, official certification and updated electoral records remain important for confirming the final results.
