Thousands of recipients under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals programme are facing growing uncertainty in the United States as delays in renewal processing threaten their jobs, legal protections, and daily lives under the administration of Donald Trump.

Recent reports indicate that many DACA recipients, commonly known as “Dreamers,” have experienced unusually long wait times for renewal approvals, leaving some without valid work permits after their previous protections expired.

Immigration advocates say the delays have disrupted employment, housing, and access to essential documents such as driver’s licences for many beneficiaries of the programme, which protects undocumented immigrants brought to the United States as children from deportation.

According to data from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, median DACA renewal processing times have risen sharply in recent months, with some applications taking several months to complete compared to much shorter wait periods previously.

The Trump administration defended the extended processing times, saying stricter vetting and screening measures were necessary to protect national security.

Immigrant rights organisations and Democratic lawmakers, however, have accused the administration of quietly undermining the programme through bureaucratic delays and policy changes. Advocacy groups warned that the situation has left many recipients in legal limbo despite applying for renewals months before expiration deadlines.

The uncertainty has intensified following a recent immigration appeals ruling stating that DACA status alone does not automatically prevent deportation proceedings.

The DACA programme, introduced in 2012, currently covers more than 500,000 immigrants across the United States, many of whom work in education, healthcare, and other essential sectors.
