British pop star, Dua Lipa has filed a lawsuit against Samsung Electronics, accusing the technology giant of using her image without permission to promote its television products.

The lawsuit, filed in a California federal court, seeks at least $15 million in damages over claims that Samsung placed a copyrighted image of the singer on packaging boxes for televisions sold in retail stores.

According to court documents, the disputed photograph titled “Dua Lipa – Backstage at Austin City Limits, 2024” is allegedly owned by the singer, who claims exclusive rights to the image.

The suit argues that the placement of her image on the television boxes falsely suggested that she endorsed Samsung products, potentially influencing customer purchases. Lawyers representing the singer included screenshots of social media comments in the filing, with some consumers reportedly stating they wanted to buy the televisions because Dua Lipa appeared on the packaging.

In addition to copyright and trademark infringement, the singer also accused Samsung of violating her publicity rights and damaging her commercial brand identity.

The legal filing claims Dua Lipa became aware of the alleged misuse in June last year and requested that the company stop using the image. However, her lawyers allege Samsung continued the practice despite repeated objections.

Samsung declined to comment publicly on the lawsuit, citing ongoing litigation.
