United States President, Donald Trump has indicated that negotiations aimed at easing tensions between Iran and Israel are nearing completion, describing the process as being in its “final stages” amid a fragile halt in hostilities between the two regional rivals.

The announcement comes as Iran and Israel temporarily suspend direct attacks against one another following days of heightened military confrontation. However, Tehran has cautioned that it is prepared to resume military action if Israel continues what it describes as aggressive operations in the region, particularly in neighbouring Lebanon.

Reports from both American and Israeli media suggest that Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu shelved plans for a fresh strike on Iranian targets after receiving a warning from Trump. According to the reports, the US president advised Israel to exercise restraint, cautioning that continued escalation could leave the country diplomatically isolated.

Meanwhile, tensions remain high along Israel’s northern frontier. The Israeli military has issued evacuation orders for residents in the Lebanese city of Tyre while intensifying operations in southern Lebanon. Lebanese authorities reported that at least four people were killed in the latest round of attacks, bringing the overall death toll since the conflict began to 3,637.

In a separate development, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie has renewed calls for a comprehensive investigation into the 1967 attack on the USS Liberty. The American intelligence-gathering vessel was attacked off Egypt’s coast during the Arab-Israeli war, resulting in the deaths of 34 US sailors and injuries to more than 170 others. Massie argued that the incident warrants renewed scrutiny to provide greater transparency and accountability.
