Chelsea captain Reece James has undergone successful knee surgery following an injury sustained during training, dealing another setback to the Premier League club ahead of its weekend fixture against Everton.
The 26-year-old England international underwent what Chelsea described as a minor surgical procedure after medical examinations established that an operation was necessary to address the injury.
The club confirmed the development in an official statement released on Friday, October 16, explaining that James had already commenced rehabilitation under the supervision of its medical department at Cobham.

The defender missed Chelsea’s last two Premier League matches, including a 3-0 defeat to Brentford and an emphatic 5-1 victory over Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge.
According to Chelsea, James was unavailable for the Bournemouth encounter while medical specialists assessed the extent of the injury he sustained during training.
The assessments subsequently established that surgical intervention was the most appropriate treatment.
The club confirmed that the operation was successful and expressed confidence in the medical support available to assist the captain throughout his recovery.
However, Chelsea did not disclose the precise nature of the knee injury or provide an official timetable for his return to competitive football.
The latest setback raises concerns about James’ availability during a crucial period of the season, particularly given his previous struggles with injuries.
The England international has experienced several fitness problems in recent seasons, including recurring hamstring difficulties that have interrupted his playing time.
Despite those challenges, James remains an influential member of the Chelsea squad, valued for his defensive abilities, leadership, versatility and attacking contributions.

His absence could require adjustments to the team’s defensive and midfield options as Chelsea seek to maintain consistency in the Premier League.
The development comes as the London club prepares to face Everton away from home on Saturday, October 17.
Chelsea currently occupy sixth position in the Premier League standings, making the upcoming fixture important to their efforts to improve their position in the table.
The club’s medical department will continue monitoring James’ progress, with decisions regarding his return expected to depend on his response to rehabilitation.
Although the procedure has been described as minor, Chelsea have indicated that the defender will receive the necessary support throughout his recovery rather than announce a premature return date.
The club and its supporters will now be hoping that James makes a full recovery and returns to action without further complications.
For Chelsea, the immediate priority will be managing his absence while ensuring that the captain receives adequate time to regain full fitness.
