At least four people, including three children and a teacher, have been killed in a shooting at an elementary school in Oregon, United States, after a 16-year-old gunman reportedly forced his way into the school building and opened fire.
The attack occurred on Thursday, October 15, at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, leaving two other people critically injured and throwing the community into mourning.
Authorities confirmed that the suspected attacker was subsequently shot dead by an armed community member who reportedly followed him into the school after witnessing his entry.

Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz identified the three children killed in the attack as being aged five, eight and 11, while a seven-year-old pupil and a 54-year-old teacher sustained critical injuries.
The injured victims were transported to St. Charles Medical Centre, where they received emergency medical attention.
According to Krantz, the incident began shortly before 1 p.m. local time when emergency dispatchers received a call from an individual who reported being shot at repeatedly by someone carrying a long gun.
Within minutes, emergency services received dozens of additional calls indicating that an armed individual had entered Silver Rail Elementary School and was firing shots.
Police said the school was placed under lockdown at approximately 1:01 p.m., while the first responding officers arrived at the scene around 1:02 p.m.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the suspect gained entry by firing at locked doors before proceeding into the school.
However, before responding officers could confront the attacker, an armed member of the public reportedly pursued him into the building and shot him.
Police officers subsequently entered the premises, confirmed the suspect’s death and conducted a systematic search to ensure there were no additional threats.

Krantz disclosed that the suspected gunman was a 16-year-old resident of Bend, although authorities had not publicly released his identity.
Investigators are working to establish the motive behind the shooting and determine whether the teenager had any previous connection with the school.
The incident prompted a large-scale emergency response involving local law enforcement, medical personnel and federal investigators.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation also confirmed its involvement, with Director Kash Patel pledging federal assistance to support the investigation.
Following the attack, pupils and school employees were evacuated from the building and transported by bus to a designated reunification centre at Journey Church, where anxious parents gathered to collect their children.
The Bend-La Pine School District announced the cancellation of classes across its schools on Friday, October 16, alongside scheduled sporting activities and other school events.
District Superintendent Steve Cook described the shooting as a devastating tragedy, expressing profound sorrow over the loss of young lives and the death of a teacher.

The attack also drew reactions from political leaders, including Oregon Governor Tina Kotek, who expressed condolences to the bereaved families and praised the community member who intervened.
Kotek acknowledged the emotional burden carried by those who witnessed the violence and urged residents to support one another during the difficult period.
Bend Mayor Melanie Kebler also condemned the attack, stressing that schools should remain places where children can learn without fear of violence.
As news of the shooting spread, hundreds of residents gathered at Drake Park in Bend for a candlelight vigil to honour the victims.
Families, community leaders and religious representatives participated in prayers and moments of reflection, while residents placed flowers and candles in remembrance of those killed.
The tragedy has renewed concerns about gun violence in the United States, where repeated shootings at educational institutions continue to generate debate over firearm regulations and school security.
According to the Gun Violence Archive, the United States had recorded 369 mass shootings in 2026 as of the incident, using its definition of incidents involving at least four people shot, excluding the attacker.

Gun violence prevention organisations have renewed calls for stronger measures to protect children and prevent further attacks.
Authorities have assured residents that investigations will continue, with additional information expected as detectives establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The identities of the victims and the suspected attacker had not been publicly disclosed at the time of the initial police briefing.
